Home Care for Back Pain Using Inversion Tables
Also see causes of back pain
After a diagnosis for back pain, especially chronic back pain, has been derived by one's physician, whether it be ruptured or herniated disc, sciatica pain, compression fractures, etc., what follows is a plan of action drawn up for relief of back pain. More and more frequently now, physicians and chiropractors are recommending that patients with back pain take part in some of their own recoveries. They are aware of the positive effects of inversion and are prescribing inversion tables, also called gravity tables, or gravity boots. Inverting, via inversion tables, gravity tables or gravity boots, relieves many forms of back pain by stretching the spine, relaxes muscles, increases the space between vertebrae, relieves pressure on disks, ligaments and nerve roots, and increases blood flow and circulation, moving oxygen-enriched blood to the upper regions of the body.
Benefits and Functioning of Inversion Tables
Inversion tables are able to be positioned to individually preferred angles (simply by one's arm movements), or to oscillate, or to lock in a fully inverted position. One simply inserts his or her feet into two cushioned ankle grips, lies back on the mat, begins to raise the arms overhead, and glides effortlessly into an inverted position.
Once inverted, the results are stretching, decompressing and reducing pressure on the spine, which instantly increases oxygen-enriched blood flow to the upper body, relaxes muscles and tendons, and reduces back pain.
Benefits of Home Inversion Tables
Inversion tables are solidly constructed, yet may be folded for easy storage and rotate on a pivot system.
The advantages of inverting at home are convenience and accessibility (one may invert at any time, day or night, and for as long as one's requirements demand without going outside the home to a health facility) and expense, since purchasing an inversion table for home use is a one-time expenditure as opposed to payments for ongoing treatments and access to inversion tables outside the home at health facilities.
(Gravity boots can also be used in conjunction with inversion tables or, more often, using a rack attached to a doorframe. This latter method of inversion requires upper body strength in order to position one's boots into the rack and to release them from the rack, so this is often not favorable to those with back pain.)
Inversion Tables and Back Pain
Finally, in a back pain related study led by physiotherapist L. J. Nosse, EMG (electromyographic) activity, an indicator of muscle pain, declined over 35% within 10 seconds of assuming the inverted position.
The results of this study point to inversion tables as being an effective and optimistic home treatment for various types of back pain and lower back pain.
