Causes of Back Pain
Back pain is a condition with which millions of North Americans suffer. In fact, approximately 80 per cent of adults experience back pain at some time in their lives.
Back pain may be related to problems with muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons, or organs, like the kidneys. Lumbago is a dull, aching lower back pain due to sudden cooling of overheated lumbar muscles, or turning the body or rising from sitting posture.
Chronic back pain may be a result of back injury or spinal degeneration. Structural issues, such as spinal degeneration, may cause not only lower back pain, but pain in the mid and/or upper areas of the spin as well. Intervertebral dics, located between the vertebrae (the spine's “cushions”) are a major site of back pain. Disc degeneration may cause ruptured disc or herniated disc, which can cause chronic back pain - either intermittent backache or constant back pain. A ruptured disc or herniated disc, also referred to as slipped disc, occurs when a disc degenerates and leads to the soft interior tissue protruding out of the disc and pressing against the spinal cord or the sciatic nerve. Pressure against the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, can cause pain which passes from the lower back and pelvis down through the buttocks and legs into feet and toes.
And many back pain cases of indeterminate cause are believed to be related to muscle strain or muscle pain or emotional and mental stress resulting in muscle tension and resultant pain.
Treating Back Pain
Initial treatment or alleviation of back pain, whether clearly diagnosed or undetermined, is often attempted with pain medication. But, in order to treat the actual source or cause of the back pain, and not merely alleviate the symptoms of back pain, a physician would most likely also prescribe remedies such as physical therapy, massage, chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, and inversion equipment or back revolution systems. Using an inversion table or gravity boots creates traction and decompresses the spine, increasing circulation and reducing back pain.
A combination of decompressing the spine with inversion tables or gravity boots and affording oneself of the aforementioned treatments and/or therapies offers a practical and rounded approach to relieving the causes and symptoms of back pain and chronic lower back pain.
